The procedure for mixing the pelletized Elvaloy® polymer with the two virgin asphalt binders was obtained from the DuPont Company. All mixing and blending were conducted at the University of Maryland laboratory using the procedure described below:
- The asphalt sample was heated in its original container in an oven until it was fluid to pour (320 degrees F); stirred until homogeneous and then poured into suitable blending containers (about half gallon).
- The container of asphalt was then heated to 380-390 degrees F for 10 minutes before adding the polymer.
- The desired amount of Elvaloy® was then slowly added into the virgin asphalt at a rate of about 10 grams per minute and the blend was stirred continuously for a total of two hours.
- The blend was placed into containers and covered tightly. These containers were then placed in an oven at 380-390 degrees F for the desired cure time.
- After the appropriate cure time (usually 24 hours), the containers were removed from the oven. At this time, the blended material was ready for use and subsequent testing.
