Preparation of Polymer Modified Binders

The procedure for mixing the pelletized Elvaloy® polymer with the two virgin asphalt binders was obtained from the DuPont Company. All mixing and blending were conducted at the University of Maryland laboratory using the procedure described below:
  1. The asphalt sample was heated in its original container in an oven until it was fluid to pour (320 degrees F); stirred until homogeneous and then poured into suitable blending containers (about half gallon).
  2. The container of asphalt was then heated to 380-390 degrees F for 10 minutes before adding the polymer.
  3. The desired amount of Elvaloy® was then slowly added into the virgin asphalt at a rate of about 10 grams per minute and the blend was stirred continuously for a total of two hours.
  4. The blend was placed into containers and covered tightly. These containers were then placed in an oven at 380-390 degrees F for the desired cure time.
  5. After the appropriate cure time (usually 24 hours), the containers were removed from the oven. At this time, the blended material was ready for use and subsequent testing.
